Borj el-Berod

Anybody in beautiful Essaouira (Morocco) would claim that Jimi Hendrix – who truly visited the city in 1969 – wrote Castles Made of Sand after seeing the ruins of a fortress called Borj el-Berod (which is not even Portuguese, as many say), that you can see here in these pics. Jimi stayed at Hotel du Pacha (today Hotel Riad al Medina) which later was famous for being a “hippie” hotel.

I went to see the ruins (a few years ago) and they are quite impressive, but truth is that Hendrix wrote the song in 1967. The Jimi Hendrix Experience began and finished work on the recording for Castles Made of Sand at London’s Olympic Sound Studios on October 29, 1967, the penultimate day of recording for Axis: Bold as Love on which the songs Up from the Skies, Bold as Love, One Rainy Wish and EXP were also completed.
