Chislehurst Caves

You gotta love Chislehurst Caves!

The place is a maze of about 22 miles of man-made underground tunnels (flint and chalk were mined here between the 13th and the 19th century) along which over 15,000 people found refuge during the German blitz, when it was turned into an air raid shelter.

In the 1960s, the caves were (also) used as a music venue. David BowieStatus QuoJimi Hendrix (twice, once on the day his first single, Hey Joe, was released, in December 1966), The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd all performed here. Moreover, on 31 October 1974 the Led Zeppelin celebrated here the launch party of their new-born label Swan Song Records.
