Fairfield Halls

In 1976 guitarist Ray Burns and drummer Chris Millar were toilet cleaners at these popular music venues in Croydon, opened in 1962. They later became Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies of The Damned. Captain Sensible has stated a few times that he started taking music more seriously after witnessing a T-Rex concert there.

Many famous acts have performed at the Fairfield Halls, including Stevie Wonder, Canned Heat, Genesis, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash, Kraftwerk, T. Rex, David Bowie, The Who, Queen, Morrissey, Status Quo, and Chuck Berry.

The venue closed in July 2016 for a major two-year refurbishment, but the charity that ran the venue, Herron Fisher, went into administration just three days later. Construction work did not begin until September 2017, 14 months after the venue closed. It was scheduled to re-open by the end of 2018, but this has later been pushed back to June 2019.
