This place, at 45 Gunter Grove, was bought by Johnny Rotten/John Lydon when the Sex Pistols collapsed. It soon worked as HQ for Public Image Ltd which he formed in their wake. He lived here between 1978 and 1981 (as marked by an unofficial Blue Plaque inside the property).
“Gunter Grove definitely had this ominous influence,” he said. “The house shook day and night with the traffic, non-stop revving of vehicles going by. So up would go the record player and the mood would get darker and darker. We were in a constant competition with the traffic outside.” Guitarist Keith Levene and drummer Jim Walker soon moved in with him, whereas bassist Jah Wobble and legendary DJ Don Letts were both regular visitors.
