The Fridge/Electric Brixton

Electric Brixton opened in September 2011 in this converted 1913 cinema (The Palladium Picture House) where once was The Fridge, a club founded by Andrew Czezowski and Susan Carrington that had among its investors The Clash’s Joe Strummer. The club was originally started in 1981 at a small venue on 390 Brixton Rd, moved in 1982 above Iceland, and eventually ended up here on Town Hall Parade in 1984. The Clash and The Smiths played at the venue before that date, when it still was a roller-disco called the ACE.

The Fridge was at the heart of the New Romantic movement, and booked such acts as Eurythmics and Pet Shop Boys before they were well known, later becoming particularly famous for its Africa Centre nights, playing hip hop and funk, hosted by legendary group Soul II Soul (in the late 80s). The Fridge closed down on 17 March 2010.

The Electric still is one of the leading nightclub venues in town, hosting weekly club nights, dance DJ sets, and a very eclectic live music programme that nonchalantly spans from dance to post-rock.

Address: Town Hall Parade, Brixton, London SW2 1RJ
