CBGB

The most legendary punk (and hardcore) club in the world – the CBGB – was once here at 315 Bowery, in New York City.

The club, opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal as a venue for Country, BlueGrass, and Blues (whence its name), soon became a famed venue of punk rock and new wave bands like the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, and Talking Heads. In April 1977, The Damned played the club, marking the first time a British punk band had ever played in America.

The club closed upon its final concert, played by Patti Smith, on October 15, 2006. Since 2008 the place has been occupied by fashion designer John Varvatos (whose works have been appreciated by the likes of Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Velvet Revolver, Chris Cornell, Dave Matthews, and Green Day), who made sure to preserve the legacy of the venue, leaving much of the toilets graffiti and some playbills from shows at the club’s 10th anniversary in 1983.
