Middle Earth

One of the most influential hippie club in London was here in the large cellar of this building. It was known as the Middle Earth (formerly, it was called Electric Garden Club). The club was closed down as a result of police pressure with the imprisonment of its founder John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins.

Bands that played here during its short lifespan, between August 1967 and March 1968, included Pink Floyd, The Who, the Jimmy Page-era Yardbirds, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Pretty Things, Fairport Convention, Jefferson Airplane, Eric Burdon, and Captain Beefheart. The Byrds also played here twice with Gram Parsons.

Soft Machine, Tomorrow, Marc Bolan & T. Rex used to play here on a regular basis.
